beltway between the will -- wilson bridge and the springfield interchange. this will complicate the commute coming in. southbound 270, no issues reported leaving hyattstown. it is heavy and slow headed out toward the truck scales. three tractor-trailered collided along southbound i-83 between freeland road and old york road. you will find it remains closed off at this time. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. n-timetraffic. . federal agents have foiled a bomb plot to blow up the federal reserve building in manhattan. the investigation all part of a terrorism operation sting. >> now, a 21-year-old man is in custody facing some pretty serious charges. fox 8's melanie alnwicks live with an update now. >> reporter: the bomb plot may have been a fake but the intent surely was not. the 21-year-old suspect saying he wanted to quote, destroy america, citing quotes from osama bin laden to justify when

he expected would be the killing of women and children in the tax. prosecutors say quazi nafis came to the u.s. from bangladesh in january on a student visa. he attended southeast missouri state stying cybersecurity nall, he contacted a confidential informant saying he wanted to form a terror cell. he met with undercover agents in september telling them he wanted to become a martyr for al-qaeda. he chose the target himself and was supplied with inactive materials to make a to 1,000 pound bomb. officials say nafis made several attempts to detonate it in lower manhattan yesterday and was then arrested. new york representative peter king says the fbi rightly let this one play out. >> they did not want this case to break out in the open as quickly as it did because they wanted to try to get more information out of him as to possible other al-qaeda operatives here in the united states. but i have no reason to believe he is night lone wolf other than the fact that during the course of the investigation, he

special ceremony at arlington national cemetery. in october 1961, jfk visited ft. bragg, north carolina and named the green beret of the official headgear of the army special forces. its roman catholic church will canonize its first native american catholic saint in a ceremony this sunday at the vatican. she was born in 1656 about 40 miles outside of what is now albany, new york. this is a statue of her in northeast d.c. history has it her parents died in a small box epidemic when she was a young child and she converted to catholicism as a teenager after her death, many miracled were reported. she is one of seven new scientists saint who will be canonized this weekend. a new way to breeze through the beltway as much as can you breeze through it. >> we'll tell you how much can you expect to pay to ride the express lanes to take the pain out of the traffic.

northbound 5 leaving clinton headed back out towards the capital beltway. we do have delays southbound kenilworth avenue headed past eastern out towards burrows. heavy and slow from 234 south headed out to the car rest area just cease of manassas. the slow traffic from fair oaks headed eastbound towards 123. no problems reported close in at the beltway. southbound 270, traffic busy approaching and passing 109. ss that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. imetraffic. . construction on the express lanes and the virginia beltway is nearly done. they will be available for 14 miles. cars who use the express lanes must have an e-zpass transponder. tolls will vary as the express lanes get more crowded. the costs will go up so traffic is expected to ease off. the average speed will maintain at a minimum of 45 miles per

. welcome back to fox 5 morning news. two-year degree are paying off. we'll have more on that in just a moment. first, a look at the markets. lauren simonetti with fox business network is live in new york with the business beat. >> good morning. >> let's talk about these modest gains first. >> yeah, know. the dow actually would have been higher by about 100 points if we took ibm and intel out of the equation yesterday but we did eke out a small gain across the board. small steps on wall street yesterday. there was a report overnight that china's economy is slowing down, worst level of growth in three and a half years but we're being pretty resilient in response to that. we have mixed futures but ultimately relatively flat. >> all right. we also want to talk about this. we've been told that four-year degrees and master's degrees equal more money. we've got some new information that says a two-year degree is not all that band and it may be better for you now. >> right now, it seems like those with the associates

degree, the two-year degree are getting hired at a pretty rapid clip. over the past six months, more than half a million jobs were create for those with if two- year degrees according to the labor market. these are x-ray technicians, other kinds of workers in the medical field, factory workers with a decent skill set. they are getting hired for a couple of reasons. lower skilled workers are the first to go during a recession and now that the recession is over, they're getting hired again. also, as higher level managers are indeed hired, those with four-year degrees plus, they're more inclined to bring on mid- level managers which oftentimes have the two-year degree. >> the good news is people are getting hired. that is the bottom line. >> right. >> that is the silver lining in all this. always good to see you. have a great day. >> you too. a terror plot focusing on a high row file target in new york city. this man was never even close to getting off the ground. we'll explain coming up. ain co

. it has been morning a year now since our region was rocked by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake. it could happen again. tuesday night, a small earthquake centered in maine was felt across much of new england. this morning, our region is taking part in what is call the great shakeout. at 10:18, everyone is encouraged to practice their quick safety drills. they say you should drop to the ground, take cover under something sturdy like a desk or a table and cover your head and neck. then hold on until the shaking actually stops. this is the first year our area

and 46% for allen. another poll showed 51% for kaine. fox 5 news edge you decide 2012 starts monday here at 6:30:00 p.m. on fox 5. on fox 5. . the trial resumes today for the two prince george's county police officers charged with beating a university of maryland student. it happened in 2010 during wild celebrations after the terps beat duke in a basketball game. yesterday, first degree assault charges were dropped against reg natural baker and james harrison. the judge said there is no evidence john mckenna had suffered a permanent injury. the officers are still facing charges of second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

some teachers are out of a job follow a disturbing incident involving some kids. four toddlers at the lynbrook child care center wandered away from a play tbrowpped and into the streets on monday. man pearments think this was just a freak accident and won't appear againen but the mother of a 2-year-old who was among the group that wandered off has now thane her son out of the facility. >> i was so angry, i was shaking. i could not stop shaking. as i pulled not school parking lot being, i heard this man yelling outside lynbrook, lynbrook, avenue lost your kids. >> it is a very good facility. teachers are very loving. the crick limb, there is a nice balance of play and structured activity. and i think this was just something really out of the ordinary. >> the day care center says it conducted the investigation and has fired the teachers involved. it says it has reported the

incident to appropriate oversight agencies. a pepco worker is being called a hero this morning. the crew was working on a home under construction in prince george's county when he spotted a fire inside. 19-year-old ripe kal happen rushed in several time to put out the fire. >> the flame actually started back up and started burningthe whole cabin again. i walked back in, put my hood over my head and put the fire on the again. >> the home owner was walking her two other sons to the bus stop and ran back to tell the workers that her 3-year-old was sleeping upstairs. they both ran back into the house and got the boy out. she is thankful that pepco crews were there and calls them heroes. coming up next, when is barbecue sauce worth $10,000? >> it must be some mighty good barbecue sauce. this stuff is long past its expiration date but someone out

we'll share this obvious will you, tucker. in 1923, south dakota state historian doan robinson came up with an idea for attracting tourists to the park there and to the black hills of dakota. and originally, the idea was to have someone sculpt local heroes, some local heroes like local indian heroes. >> local western heroes. >> i had on my list, lewis and clark, red cloud and buffalo bill cody. >> there was some thought of sculpt sculpting those figures out of the needles. he wrote to a famous sculptor. he liked to celebrate america. he was known for sculpting this great bust of abraham lincoln and was supposed to do some

work in the south stone mountain of confederate leaders there. that project fell through so he was able for mount rushmore. he actually came up with the idea. >> maybe it is a good thing that project fell through. there you go. >> it depends on your perspective. >> mount rushmore, so yeah, he selected these four presidents and i didn't realize the symbolism behind the four presidents that he chose. >> okay. >> george washington, the first president, of course, was picked because he represents the birth of the united states. >> that makes sense. >> and washington, since he was the first president, his figure is dominant. it is out in front. the other presidents. >> i didn't realize that. >> that's right. >> thomas jefferson, the third president was picked. he represents the growth of the united states and sort of an interesting story. >> yeah. i'll tell you that one here. there is a picture of mount rushmore as we know t i want to show you a picture after

washington was completed. the sculptor and his team began work on jefferson. jefferson originally was on the other side of washington. isn't that interesting? >> that is a great find. >> they worked on it for almost two years and found a crack in the stone that made it not stable. they had to start all over. they blasted the work he had done off the stone and started on the other side. >> real quick, teddy roosevelt represents the development of the united states, 26th president and abraham lincoln, the 16th president represents the preservation of the united states. >> so it is kind of a shrine to democracy. it represents the early history of the united states, first 150 years. that is why he chose those people. the project was begun in the 1920s, not fin underred until 1941, unfontly, shortly after the original sculptor died.
